An important plea to myself about resting

Dear Wendy

You are ALLOWED to rest and relax and do nothing.  This is not a crime.  Today you did take some books back because you had been overcharged (usually you would just let it go), you did sleep in, you did eat fairly healthy food, you did go alcohol free, you did manage to not watch TV, you did a post for Instagram, you did do your gratitude exercises and the next chapter in The Magic.  These are good things.  You didn’t study, you didn’t exercise, you didn’t clean, you didn’t cook, you didn’t do your $10 shopping, you didn’t catch up on yesterday’s course work, you didn’t wash up.  WHO CARES?  Why does it feel so uncomfortable that you read a whole book today?  Yes, it was a slightly trashy fiction book and not a personal development growth book.  You would let yourself do this on a holiday away from home.  Rest, relaxation, rejuvenation.  These words exist for a reason.  It is very very hot here in Sydney.  Your body needs to take it easy.   And you are allowed to read average fiction.  Did you enjoy the book?  Yes, you did.  You like a happy ending (as long as it’s not too cheesy).  What is wrong with this?

Why are you not allowing yourself to jump and down with happiness that you did something so important?  You rested!  Oh how we all need rest.  Why can’t you take a day off?  What difference will it make to your life in a month, or a year or in 5 years?  I say it will make no difference.  You do not need to save the world every day.  Is it just a lack of exercise making you feel a bit antsy?

What about everyone else?  What don’t you allow yourself to do?  What makes you feel guilty and antsy? Have we lost the art of doing nothing?

What if you give yourself permission to relax?  To do some nothing?  To waste some time?  Would this help?

Be kind to yourself (it can be a slow learning process).
